 Very Special Gold Sponsor

Warren Electric returns for the fourth year.  Owner and long time Scouter Jeff Warren is our contact and the prime mover behind Kiwanis Division 14's project to renovate Camp Kiwanis at the Pipsico Scout Reservation.  Jeff was honored at the Division 14 Gala on 2 March but, of course, had a scout commitment and could not attend.  Gala organizer Olivia Trombino presented his plaque at our 6 March meeting.

Reading is Fundamental

Our 2 Mar visit to Broadlawn HeadStart pulled together several of our partners to help this pre-school.  The REACH (Reading Enriches All Children) Foundation provided 40 high quality books.  Readers from CHIP SHR (Childrens Health Investment Progran, South Hampton Roads), the Virginia State Police Association, and Great Bridge Kiwanis entertained the kids.  Above, the CHIP SHR mascot, Chipper the Duck and Kiwanian Beth Alexander look on as State Police Sergeant Michelle Anaya reads Dogs Underwater. Sergeant Anaya gets the kids excited about the book.  Chipper and her escort Sherri Klym, CHIP's Director of Development, lead the kids in a spirited duck dance. Finally Chipper and Kiwanis President Elizabeth Griffing help each child select two books to take home. This is what Kiwanis is all about.

State Police Partnership

Continuing our partnership with the State Police Association, Sgt Michelle Anaya, the Public Information Officer for this area, received our annual contribution to by the bears for Trooper Teddy to distribute at CHKD.  In the past, the event  was held on Valentines Day but the last few years, flu precautions have grealt reduced interactions with the patients.  This year, the event will be in May or June, after flu season so the kids can actually interact with Trooper Teddy.  Michelle will also be joining us on 2 Mar to read to the kids at Broadlawn Headstart.  The books we will read are in the background.

Chili Cookoff

The quarterly meeting of the Division 14 Council featured a chili cookoff.  We had two entries - Jim Chellew's spicy Korean chili and Joe Trombino's white chicken chili. Unfortunately, neither garnered enough votes to take the prize.

Teacher & Staff Appreciation

Several years ago, we adopted the Rena B Wright Elementary (K-2) School in South Norfolk.  Over the years, we have developed a tremendous respect for the faculty and staff.  A truly dedicated group, they go above and beyond in helping their students.  Each Christmas, we give each teacher and staff member a poinsettia to show how much we appreciate their efforts for our community.

If you are interested in serving our community, you should get to know Great Bridge Kiwanis.  A group of your neighbors, we have proudly served our community for the past thirty one years.  To learn more about our work, click on About Us in the menu to the left and then click on Projects.

We meet for breakfast the first and second Tuesday at the Cahoon Plantation Golf Course Restaurant, the Plantation Cafe at 7:30 AM.  On the fourth Tuesday, we meet for dinner at 7:00 PM at Jin's Asian Cuisine.
