Reading is Fundamental

The teachers loved the concept, but apparently holding our final Reading Is Fundamental at Broadlawn Head Start on the last day of school was not such a great idea. Only two students came to class, vastly outnumbered by the four Kiwanians and two State Troopers who came to read and lead activities.  The kids were sent home and so were we, but not before we presented the teachers with a token of our appreciation for their efforts in helping their students get the best possible start in life.  The day was not a total loss, as we got to meet Batman, Trooper Turner's bomb-sniffing K9 partner.

Aspire Graduation

2018 Class Graduates

As  part of our long-standing support for the Sheriff's ASPIRE program, Great Bridge members Jim Chellew and Rob Hamlin attended the ceremony where the class of 2018 graduated and the class of 2020 was inducted into the program.  ASPIRE takes one rising 10th grader from each city high school for a two year program designed to develop self-esteem and important life skills.  Upon successful completion, the student recieves a $1000 college scholarship.  In a program first, all the girls in this year's class completed the program and will be gong on to college.

2020 Class begins

Fifth Tuesday Social

Schnitsel, goulash, stuffed cabbage, streudel and more.  We continued our fifth Tuesday eat around the world campaignwith Eastern Europewan cuisine at Norfolk's Monastery Restaurant.  The food was excellent, the service outstanding, and the owner effusiveabout how her restauirant came to be here and her menu.  So far we've also done Indian, Greek, and Italian.  Any suggestions for July's fifth Tuesday?

We're Back

After a two-year hiatus due to construction, we will again be providing concessions for TCC's Drama Department's annual outdoor production of Othello, 20-24 June.  Typically, we set up about 5:30 PM and leave after intermission around 9:30 PM.  Come on out to help and see a great play.
